Since the Middle Ages, nobility and royalty have used jewelry with precious stones as a symbol of power and status. It wasn’t just about beauty; these pieces reflected wealth and prestige. Engagement rings with diamonds, for example, became popular in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy.

But the real boom in rings with massive rocks came in 1947 when the company De Beers launched the famous campaign "A diamond is forever." They sold the idea that eternal love had to be sealed with a diamond and that a man should spend at least three months’ salary on the ring. It was a brilliant marketing move that made big rocks and diamonds the gold standard for engagement rings.

And that’s how we got here.

THE EROTICISM OF STEFAN MAY

Born in Germany in 1962, Stefan May discovered his passion for photography after studying medicine.
He first documented skin diseases using a Leica and a ring flash for archival purposes. Later, he moved to Sydney, where he worked as an assistant to fashion and beauty photographers. Eventually, he decided to fully dedicate himself to photography, working internationally for prestigious magazines such as Leica Fotografie International, Black & White Australia, Photo Italia, GQ, Vogue, and for clients like IBM, Lancaster, Coty Cosmetics, and Davidoff.

His work—available in an exclusive online archive—covers themes such as beauty, the human body, portraits, celebrities, animals, and landscapes. However, he is best known for his sensual black-and-white photographs of women and couples.

RANDALL HOBBET'S EROTICISM

Since his teenage years, Randall always carried a camera, influenced by his father, an amateur photographer with a darkroom at home. After 33 years as a geologist and now retired, he began exploring photography as a form of creative expression. He is fascinated by beauty in all its forms, from wildlife to landscapes, architecture, and the abstract. Although he initially avoided including people in his images, he was always drawn to the female form. His two main areas of interest today are dance and artistic nude photography.
