WHAT IS ART AND WHY DOES IT BAFFLE US

Art is a form of human expression that aims to communicate ideas, emotions, or visions of the world, and its definition is as broad as it is subjective. Historically, institutions such as museums, critics, or the art market have played a significant role in legitimizing what is considered art. However, ultimately, its true essence lies in its ability to impact those who experience it. If something evokes emotion, sparks reflection, or creates a connection, it can be considered art, even without official validation.

Controversy often arises because art, especially contemporary art, frequently challenges traditional ideas of beauty or technical skill. Abstract or conceptual works may seem incomprehensible or empty simply because they defy cultural expectations of what art “should” be. This disconnect is heightened when there is a lack of context about the artist’s intention or the meaning behind the piece, making it appear trivial or absurd. Additionally, there is a perception that some institutions or critics inflate the value of certain works, leading to mistrust.

However, not all art is meant to be liked. Sometimes its purpose is merely to make us feel something—even rejection. What some might dismiss as “garbage” could hold deep significance for others.
